WASHINGTON – Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D–Michigan) will open a panel discussion with activists of color today, Feb. 25. The discussion will explore the rights of racial-justice advocates in the wake of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.
Historically, violent events and national crises — like the Jan. 6 white-supremacist insurrection — have been used to justify the use of harsh surveillance and policing tools that undermine the rights of Black and Brown communities.
MediaJustice, Free Press Action, the ACLU and Color Of Change will bring together organizers and experts representing diverse communities under constant surveillance by law enforcement, including the FBI. Together they will urge Congress and the Biden administration to root out white supremacy in law enforcement and end the criminalization of Black and Brown dissent.
WHAT: Safety, Not Surveillance: Resisting Criminalization After Crisis
