Inside Georgia, there are two borders that are not even supposed to exist, but appear seemingly out of nowhere. The de facto authorities of the breakaway South Ossetia and Abkhazia regions have been busy for years, installing barbed wire, fences, signs, patrols, and surveillance — with heavy ground support from Russia.
Locals who live close by face arrests for illegal trespassing, even though they are legally still in the same country.
