Last summer, ProPublica, The Detroit Free Press, and Bridge Michigan reported on the story of Grace, a Michigan teen who was sent to a detention center for months for not doing online coursework. After her case sparked a national outcry, she was released and her case dismissed.
In this digital event moderated by ProPublica reporter Jodi S. Cohen, Grace joins a panel of experts to talk about Michigan’s juvenile justice system, in which judges routinely lock children up for noncriminal offenses like disobeying their parents or skipping school. They discuss the problems, potential paths for change and take audience questions.
