For decades the housing crisis in America has grown, spurred by rising rents and low-paying wages. Forty percent of Americans were already one paycheck away from poverty, and the pandemic now stands to push them over the edge. When eviction moratoriums are lifted, a staggering 30 million Americans could face the very real prospect of having no place to live. As COVID-19 fuels a surge in unemployment and millions of households spend more than half of their income on housing, many Americans are on the brink of destitution. VICE News’ Ben Solomon meets those pulled into the cycle of homelessness: from eviction to living on the fringes of society.
